Kinja'd!!!

So this winter I put brand new winter rubber on the Snowbeast, replacing the very old and worn Blizzaks that were on before. I've never had brand new snow tires on a car, so I was expecting to be impressed, but not this much. I am amaze.

The DC area got a very slick snow today, and as usual, cars are simply immobilized. I have lots of traction with these tires, so I decided to take a back road and a skip a good bit of traffic. This back road has a big hill, and when I got there, a Q7 and a G550 are both stranded halfway up, and a cop is waving me down saying "turn around, the hill is too slick, you won't make it." (People in Potomac call the cops when they get stuck in snow.)

I rolled up that hill doing 20 without one bit of wheelspin. Cops reaction:

It was brilliant. Around here, everyone scoffs when you suggest snow tires for the winter, but then you see a lot of this, and it makes it all worth it:

I saw funnier, like a Indy 500 Official Pace Car Camaro on 495, just not moving an inch, lol.

That's because the Snowbeast is in fact a Taurus.

They look good in that blue. I wish mine was maroon with tan interior instead of double grey.

The Yokohama's I've got this year have been such a revelation when the roads turn to deep ruts of snow and slush.

Too bad I still have to worry about everyone around me that doesn't have snow tires...

IceGuard iG52c's.

Good price, and from the reviews I read, good performance. One of the reviews was from this Canadian blogger that compared them to a pair of Nokians he used to own. Having never owned or used Nokians, I can't say if the comparison is apt or not, but it is what it is.

If nothing else, the grip has certainly been great. One of the nights home I even had to deal with freezing rain, and the roads being covered in frozen/freezing slush. Not a slip.

(People in Potomac call the cops when they get stuck in snow.)

I laughed so hard at this. I grew up in a buffer zone where I was within the city limits of Rockville, but had a 20854 zip code. I went to Rockville schools and my neighborhood had the blue street signs with the Rockville logo on them, like this.

Kinja'd!!!

Many people in the 20854 slice of Rockville would say they lived in Potomac, and if you addressed mail to us in Potomac, MD 20854 it'd get there fine.

I wasn't as thrilled to claim Potomac residency. Kids at school gave me shit for being a rich kid from Potomac and I'd be like, "But my street signs are BLUE, I live in Rockville!"

(Little did I know that in the scheme of things Rockville is still pretty fancy, just not quite as fancy as Potomac.)

This alone has made me seriously look at a set for my Magnum, which I should be getting soon. I'm tempted to have them 2 day shipped to my shop and have them put them on. Currently running a set of Firestone Firehawks with less than 1200 miles or something around there. Got the tires, then had a motor problem, so the tires have not been used much. I'm very seriously considering this right now.

Price isn't bad either.

I know this because my mom was the type of person who would get overly involved in local politics—she was on the Rockville planning commission for probably a decade—and point out these little distinctions to me. Like how Rockville is an incorporated city and Potomac is just an unincorporated area .

I dunno if Rockville people still have an inferiority complex about Potomac. Rockville has gotten a lot snobbier since I graduated high school in 2000.

MD drivers were killing me this morning. I'm not even from somewhere that gets real snow and I manage to not drive like a total assclown in the snow, but there were seriously like five vehicles stuck at the top of the hill I live on.

I don't live in the South Towns, so I didn't have to deal with that 8ft of snow that Buffalo got (I live half an hour north) but the worst I've had to deal with so far was about 4-6" of the fluffy stuff.

I backed out of my driveway that morning without having to shovel an inch of snow. Even the cruft that the plows left behind at the end of the driveway was no match for the grip.

And I'm just in a Mazda3 hatchback. I don't have AWD or anything.

Just talked with my shop, they're ordering me a set right now. For a 4400lb RWD station wagon, I'm taking zero chances. Cheaper than an accident, right?

Let me know if you have a good experience with them. I'm always interested in one's experience with products I end up recommending them, because I want it to turn out well.

I mentioned my new all seasons, and he essentially said "look outside." Because we have a lot of crap on the roads today. My sister is running a set of Dunlop winter tires on her Mini, so even just being a passenger, I'll gladly convert to the church of snow tires. We made it into a completely unplowed parking lot without any slippage, wheel spin or complaint. I'm about to start commuting through a new town with a few big hills and simply put, $600 for a set of snow tires is a hell of a lot cheaper than sliding down a hill onto a luxury car dealer's lot.

None taken—I also haven't lived there since 2000. Now I'm an imported East Coast snob living in Wisconsin and complaining about the lack of proper Jewish delis and NY-style pizza.
